Questions regarding the Széchenyi István University Scientific Scholarship call can ONLY be accepted in writing at alapitvany@sze.hu. We will respond to your questions as soon as possible. Applications submitted during the first application period will be evaluated at the same time in February 2027, so the date of submission has no effect on the result. Question: Can multiple authors apply with the same article?

Answer: Only one author may apply with any given publication. If several authors meet the application criteria, they must agree among themselves, in a declaration, which of them will submit the application. The declaration template is available on the website.

Question: Is it mandatory to use the published authorship declaration in the case of multiple authors, or can the authors prepare their own declaration?

Answer: Its use is mandatory and it may not be modified other than by filling in the required information.

Question: Is an author entitled to submit five applications in one semester (in one application period), i.e. a total of ten applications in one academic year?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Can applications be submitted electronically?

Answer: No, the application documents must be submitted in paper form as specified in the call. One article may be submitted per application form, and all attachments must be attached to the application form. The application form is invalid without the required attachments.

Question: Is there a certificate template for confirming employment in an academic or research position?

Answer: No certificate template is provided; the certificate must be issued by the applicant’s immediate manager.

Question: Do applicants have to provide proof of their employment relationship with Széchenyi István University twice?

Answer: No. It is sufficient to provide proof when submitting the application. The Foundation will verify the existence of the employment relationship on the last day of the application period directly with the University’s Directorate of Human Resources.

Question: Can applicants apply with an article that has already been accepted but has not yet been published?

Answer: No.

Question: Does the order in which applications are submitted affect the evaluation?

Answer: No. Applications may be submitted throughout the application period, but they will be evaluated at the same time after the submission deadline, regardless of the order in which they are received.

Question: If a published article has two authors affiliated with Széchenyi István University and one of them has received funding through the Széchenyi István University Publication Support Programme, is the other author still eligible to apply to the Foundation for the Scientific Scholarship? 

Answer: No. 

Question: Who is considered a senior employee of Széchenyi István University?

Answer: According to the Deed of Foundation of Széchenyi István University, the University’s senior employees are the Rector, the President and the Director of Finance. They are not eligible to apply.

Question: What is the difference between MTMT and Scopus?

Answer: The Hungarian Science Bibliography (Magyar Tudományos Művek Tára, MTMT) is Hungary’s national bibliographic database serving multiple purposes.

Scopus is Elsevier’s abstract and citation database, which indexes major journals, books and conference proceedings across all fields of science internationally. In addition, researcher profiles and journal metrics can be searched and viewed in the database. University rankings such as Times Higher Education (THE) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) take publications and citations into account exclusively on the basis of publications indexed in the Scopus database and the SCImago classification derived from it.

Question: My publication is not visible in Scopus. Who should I contact?

Answer:

Question: My publication is not visible in the Web of Science (WoS) database. Who should I contact?

Answer:

1.  The editorial office of the journal.
2.  Questions can be submitted directly via the Web of Science Help Center https://webofscience.zendesk.com/hc/en-us.
3. A correction can also be requested through the author profile.

Question: What do the D1 and Q1–Q4 classifications mean?

Answer: The SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) is a freely accessible portal. The SJR primarily indicates which quartile a journal falls into within a particular subject-area ranking: the first quartile (0–25%, Q1, i.e. the top quartile, where Q denotes quartile), the second (Q2), the third (Q3), or the last quartile (Q4).

MTMT imports Q1–Q4 data from SCImago data releases, assigns these values to journals and makes them publicly available in the database. The data are updated once a year, in the summer.

The principle of D1 calculation (applied exclusively in MTMT):

Journals falling within the top 10% of the list narrowed down in this way receive a D1 classification. If the length of the journal list for the given subject area is Y (where Q1–Q4 values are available), and the position of a given journal in the subject-area list provided by SCImago is X, the publication is classified as D1 if X/Y ≤ 10%. No rounding is applied: for a list containing 109 items, for example, the journal ranked 11th does not receive a D1 classification under this rule. The journal ranked first on the list always receives a D1 classification, even where this would not follow from the above formula (in lists containing fewer than 10 items).

Question: Q1–Q4 classifications are also available in the Web of Science (WoS) database. Are these taken into account for the purposes of the application?

Answer: No. The SCImago classification shown in MTMT is taken into account.

Question: What do the A, B, C and D classifications mean?

Answer: In some fields, publication in Hungarian is common, as is publication in international journals that are not indexed in WoS or Scopus but are regarded as high-quality journals within the field. For this reason, certain sections and committees of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences assign A, B, C and D classifications to journals in their respective fields. These classifications may be used alongside international subject-area journal rankings.

Question: What is the difference between the D1, Q1–Q4 and A, B, C and D classifications?

Answer: The Q1–Q4 classification is a ranking available in the international SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) (http://www.scimagojr.com) database. The A, B, C and D classification is a Hungarian ranking system established by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Question: Where can I find assistance and whom should I contact regarding Scopus/Web of Science (WoS) affiliation?

Question: If an author acknowledges a company, organisation, etc. for providing equipment, software or other resources used in writing the article, does this exclude the article from the Scientific Scholarship application?

Answer: No. In such cases, the author is eligible to apply.

Answer: Yes. Applications may only be submitted with publications available in the Scopus database.

Question: Can I apply with a Q3 or Q4 publication?

Answer: No. Applications may only be submitted with D1, Q1 or Q2 publications.

Question: Is a “review article” eligible for a higher scholarship amount?

Answer: Yes. An additional HUF 100,000 is awarded.

Question: Is a publication included in the Top Journal List (Shanghai List) eligible for a higher scholarship amount?

Answer: Yes. An additional HUF 100,000 is awarded.

Question: If the journal is indexed in either the Science Citation Index Expanded or the Social Sciences Citation Index of the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection, is the publication eligible for a higher scholarship amount?

Answer: Yes. An additional HUF 100,000 is awarded.

Question: Where can I check whether a journal is included in the Science Citation Index Expanded or the Social Sciences Citation Index?

Answer:

• Search for the journal title or ISSN in the search field.
• Find the relevant journal in the list of results.
• Look for the Web of Science Core Collection information, which is available without signing in.

Question: What qualifies as a publication produced within an international research network?

Answer: A publication prepared with at least two co-authors who have institutional affiliations in different foreign countries and with whom, including the article submitted with the application, at least three joint publications indexed in the Scopus database have been published since 2022.

Question: Is a publication considered to have been produced within an international research network if it is the first or second time I have published with an author affiliated with an institution ranked among the top 100 in the latest QS WUR or THE WUR rankings?

Answer: No.

Question: Is a publication considered to have been produced within an international research network if it is the first or second time I have published in collaboration with at least two co-authors who have institutional affiliations in different foreign countries?

Answer: No.

Question: Is a publication considered to have been produced within an international research network if it is the first or second time I have published in collaboration with at least two co-authors who have institutional affiliations in different foreign countries and with an author affiliated with an institution ranked among the top 100 in the latest QS WUR or THE WUR rankings?

Answer: No.

Question: Can three additional scholarship amounts of HUF 100,000 each be awarded if the publication meets all three conditions?

Answer: Yes.
